Bernice Pauahi, a direct descendant of King Kamehameha I, married the successful entrepreneur Charles Reed Bishop. Her legacy became the Bishop Estate and founded the Kamehameha Schools. After her death, Bishop founded the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum in 1889, which is thriving in Honolulu. Hugo Stangenwald was the first resident daguerreotypist in Hawaii, who arrived in 1853. This daguerreotype was made when Pauahi was about 22 or 23 years old. Collection of Ken Nelson.
